Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, typically worsening during the winter months when daylight hours are shorter. However, some people may experience SAD during the summer.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of SAD include:
These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and may vary in severity from person to person.
Causes
The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it is often linked to reduced exposure to sunlight. This lack of sunlight can affect the production of hormones such as melatonin and serotonin, which regulate sleep and mood, respectively. It can also disrupt the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), leading to symptoms of depression.
Treatment
Several treatments are available for managing SAD:
Lifestyle Changes: Increasing exposure to natural sunlight, regular exercise and stress management.
Light Therapy: Using a light box to simulate sunlight exposure.
Talking Therapies: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychotherapy, counselling or psychological counseling provided by a psychologist or counsellor.
Medication: Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
