The Danger of Video Games for Children and Adults with ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. In today’s digital age, video games have become a significant part of many individuals’ lives. However, there are many problems arising from the relationship between playing video games and ADHD.

Risk of Addiction

Individuals with ADHD may be more susceptible to developing problematic gaming habits or addiction. The immersive nature of video games can lead to excessive gaming, which can interfere with daily responsibilities and social interactions.

Increased Impulsivity

Some studies suggest that fast-paced or violent video games may increase impulsivity in individuals with ADHD. This can exacerbate symptoms and lead to behavioural problems such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Negative Impact on Sleep

Excessive screen time, especially before bedtime, can disrupt sleep. Poor sleep can worsen ADHD symptoms, creating a cycle of increased inattention and hyperactivity.

Social Isolation

While online gaming can provide social interaction, it can also lead to social isolation if it replaces face-to-face interactions. This can slow the development of social skills and relationships.

If an individual, with or without ADHD, has any of the above problems, psychotherapy, psychological counselling or counseling are strongly recommended.
